An article by Lucy Schultz (ABD), “Nishida Kitarō, G. W. F. Hegel, and the Pursuit of the Concrete: A Dialectic of Dialectics,” was recently published in Philosophy East & West. The article compares the dialectical methods of Hegel and the prominent 20th century Japanese philosopher Nishida, demonstrating how the different ways they use logic shape their conceptions of the individual self and its relationship to history. The article is based on Schultz’s research as an MA student at Stony Brook University which she developed and revised as a doctoral student during a short-term research residency at the Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture in Nagoya, Japan.
