Diversity Focus (undergraduate students)
The UO Philosophy Department offers an optional and elective Diversity Focus to undergraduate philosophy majors, minors, and those enrolled in the ethics minor, to be completed within four years. The Diversity Focus in Philosophy is also available to ALL UO undergrads, regardless of major or minor. If your major or minor is not in philosophy, you will need to take one additional philosophy course as a requirement before enrolling in one of the two listed diversity courses.
1. Successful completion of 2 listed diversity courses that are currently taught.
2. Successful completion of one new four-credit capstone course, Philosophical Methods and Diversity. This capstone course will be taught for the first time in 2020-21. This capstone course will require a term paper in which students reflect on the relationship between philosophy and diversity.
3. Attendance at 6 UO Diversity events in the philosophy department or other units on campus. Students will need to request a signature from the event organizer (forms are available here) and are to write a paragraph, with date and event content, that needs to be submitted to the Diversity Advisor no later than 30 days after attendance. The Diversity Advisor will determine appropriate events each term in consultation with the Diversity Committee. Students may check with the Advisor beforehand. (Events require intellectual content and except for extraordinary circumstances, protest or entertainment events will not be sufficient.)
These requirements can be met in any order, provided it is within 4 years from start to finish. To enroll in the program, please fill out and submit the Diversity Focus form; contact the Philosophy Department UOPhil@uoregon.edu if you have questions.
