Diversity Focus (graduate students)
The UO Philosophy Department offers an optional and elective Diversity Focus to MA and PhD students.
1. Successful completion of 2 listed graduate diversity courses that are currently taught.
2. Successful completion of one new four-credit capstone course, Philosophical Methods and Diversity. This capstone course will be offered as necessary to fulfill the needs of the students enrolled in the Diversity Focus and will result in a term paper in which students reflect on the relationship between philosophy and diversity. Students completing this course will be eligible to teach to capstone undergraduate course for the Diversity Focus.
3. Attendance at 6 UO Diversity events in the philosophy department or other units on campus. Students will need to request a signature from the event organizer (forms are available here) and are to write a paragraph, with date and event content, that needs to be submitted to the Diversity Advisor no later than 30 days after attendance. The Diversity Advisor will determine appropriate events each term in consultation with the Diversity Committee. Students may check with the Advisor beforehand. (Events require intellectual content and except for extraordinary circumstances, protest or entertainment events will not be sufficient.)
These requirements can be met in any order, provided it is within 4 years from start to finish. To enroll in the program, please fill out and submit the Diversity Focus form; contact the Philosophy Department UOPhil@uoregon.edu if you have questions.
