Philosophy Department Commencement
Spring Commencement ~ 11 AM on Saturday, 16 June 2018
in the Beall Concert Hall
which is inside of the MarAbel B. Frohnmayer Music Building at 961 East 18th Avenue
Please note that the Saturday ceremony is for Philosophy only; the all-University Commencement is on Monday, June 18.
The first step to graduating with your Philosophy degree is to apply for your degree online.
Please note that applying for your degree is not required if you just want to participate in the Commencement festivities with others in your class; however, if you don’t apply, you will not receive a physical diploma. Students are allowed to apply for graduation up to twelve months before the intended term of graduation.
Undergraduate Degree application deadlines:
Please note: the last day for undergraduate students to apply for graduation is Sunday at midnight after the fourth week of classes. At that point, DuckWeb will no longer allow students to apply for graduation online; students must visit the Office of the Registrar and file a late petition.
- Fall – Sunday, 22 October 2017
- Winter – Sunday, 4 February 2018
- Spring – Sunday, 29 April 2018
- Summer – Sunday, 8 July 2018
Graduate Degree application deadlines:
Please note: graduate students planning to receive an advanced degree or graduate certificate must file an online application for advanced degree no later than the end of the second week of classes in the term of completion.
- Fall – Friday, 6 October 2017
- Winter – Friday, 19 January 2018
- Spring – Friday, 13 April 2018
- Summer – Friday, 29 June 2018
Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall graduates are welcome to participate in our Spring 2018 Commencement ceremony (the Department does not hold a Summer Commencement ceremony).
Spring Commencement Participation
The Philosophy Faculty invite graduating students and their guests to attend the Department’s graduation ceremony at 11:00 AM on Saturday, 16 June 2018, in the Beall Concert Hall, which is inside of the MarAbel B. Frohnmayer Music Building at 961 East 18th Avenue.
The 2018 ceremony will be live-streamed to the internet at http://music.uoregon.edu/livestream/index.htm! Undergraduate students who plan to walk in the ceremony need to fill out a Graduation Information Form by Thursday June 14, which is available either for online submission (preferred) or as a hardcopy PDF (to be submitted to the Philosophy Department Office). Graduate students need to submit a statement to their advisor.
Invitations and regalia (cap, gown, and tassel) can be ordered from the University of Oregon Duck Store. Graduation Images will photograph all graduates at the ceremony (more information about Graduation Images is below).
This ceremony is for both undergraduate and graduate majors, and we anticipate that our ceremony will not exceed 90 minutes. Although no tickets are required to attend any UO graduation ceremony, early arrivals always have the best choice of seating. Graduating students will be individually recognized on stage and are expected to be at the commencement location, fully robed by 10:45 am; students and faculty will be led into a rehearsal room, form a single line to march into the Hall (faculty in the lead, followed by PhD, then MA, then BA/BS), and then take seats roped off and reserved for the graduates. Students will rise by rows when the first student’s name is called; each student will walk up the steps on the right hand side of the stage, approach the lectern, stop with feet pointing in the same direction as the graphic of feet on the floor (for the hand-shake photo op), receive an empty diploma cover (the actual diploma is mailed directly to each student’s “RO Diploma address” several weeks after commencement and after all grades have been entered for the graduating term), and then exit the stage by walking down the steps on the opposite end of the stage and returning to the same seat.
Information about the University Graduation Celebration is on the UO Commencement page (the main ceremony will take place 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the Matthew Knight Arena, preceded by a Duck Walk Parade/Processional to the Arena from the corner of 13th Avenue & University Street in front of the EMU that begins promptly at 8:15 a.m.).
