Fulden Ibrahimhakkioglu Publishes Article in the Fall 2012 APA Newsletter

Fulden Ibrahimhakkioglu’s article “Embodied Affective Experience in Saba Mahmood’s Politics of Piety: Reformulating Agency for an Inclusive Transnational Feminism” will appear in the Fall 2012 APA Newsletter on Feminism and Philosophy, available on the APA website.

In this essay, Fulden responds to two strands of criticism that Saba Mahmood’s project has been seen susceptible to: that her account falls into cultural relativism, and that it is irrelevant to feminism. She argues against these by demonstrating that Mahmood undertakes a reformulation of agency that may offer a basis for feminist projects of cultural translation. In so doing, Fulden locates her project somewhere along the lines of feminist phenomenology, contrary to the widely accepted view which allies Mahmood with Foucault and Butler.

Fulden is a doctoral student with interests in Third World feminisms, ethics, and phenomenology of embodiment. She was selected as one of the two recipients of the Dan Kimble First Year Teaching Award for 2011-12.
