AdmissionPlease note: Application materials must be postmarked by January 15 to be considered for the following academic year (exception: if January 15 falls on a weekend or holiday, forms are to be postmarked by the following business day). Applicants
for admission to graduate studies are asked to write a brief letter
explaining
their philosophical background and their specific philosophical interests.
This helps the department's admissions committee decide whether this
is
the most appropriate philosophy department for the applicant's goals.
Applicants also need to submit a writing sample, a college transcript,
and a notification of test scores on either the Graduate Record Examinations
(GRE) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). GRE scores
are sent separately from Educational Testing
Service. The University of Oregon's code is 4846, and the Philosophy
Department's code is 2801. In past years, a score of 600 on the TOEFL
paper-based test and 173 on the computer based test has been required
of international students unless the native language is English. Beginning
with the 2008-2009 admissions cycle, the University’s institutional
minimum TOEFL scores for international graduate admissions will be
as follows: Also, beginning with 2008-2009 admissions, the University will begin formally accepting the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assessment score as an alternative to the TOEFL. The established minimum IELTS Overall Score for UO graduate admission will be 7.0, which is comparable to the new TOEFL scores cited above. The IELTS has been an accepted assessment for UO undergraduate admissions for several years and is already being accepted, on a case-by-case basis, in graduate admissions. You can learn more about the IELTS at www.ielts.org. Please note that Although the IELTS has a speaking component, it will not be accepted as an alternative to the SPEAK Test for teaching GTFs at this time. See the Graduate School's website for details. In addition
to general university regulations governing graduate admission (see
the Graduate School section), the Department of Philosophy also requires
applicants to submit three confidential report forms (* Report
on Graduate Applicant) completed by teachers (preferably philosophy
teachers) familiar with the applicant's academic background. A second set of transcripts (and a copy of the Graduate Admission Application, if not already submitted online) is to be sent to the Department of Philosophy, 1295 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR 97403-1295. Confidential report forms must be sent directly to the department by the faculty members recommending the applicant. Send all supporting materials to the Department of Philosophy. Although Graduate Teaching Fellowships are the only form of financial assistance available through the Philosophy Department, other fellowships and sources of financial aid may be available, and are listed on the Graduate School's Funding Resources page. Please note: Application materials must be postmarked by January 15 to be considered for the following academic year (exception: if January 15 falls on a weekend or holiday, forms are to be postmarked by the following business day).
